COSME programme

COSME is the EU programme for the Competitiveness of Enterprises and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). It runs from 2014 to 2020 with a planned budget of EUR 2.3 billion.

COSME aims to support SMEs in the following 4 areas: 

  •          Improving access to finance
  •          Access to markets
  •          Supporting entrepreneurs
  •          Improving conditions for competitiveness

Third Health Programme (2014-2020)

The third EU health programme is the main instrument of the European Commission to implement the EU health strategy.

The programme has four overarching targets:

  • Promote health, prevent diseases and foster supportive environments for healthy lifestyles taking into account the 'health in all policies' principle,
  • Protect Union citizens from serious cross-border health threats,
  • Contribute to innovative, efficient and sustainable health systems,
  • Facilitate access to better and safer healthcare for Union citizens.

Research Fund for Coal and Steel

The Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS) provides funding for research projects in coal and steel. Supported projects cover core production processes; products and applications, quality control, utilisation and conversion of resources, safety at work, environmental protection by reducing CO2 emissions from coal use and steel production, and social issues.

Consumer programme (2014-2020)

The Consumer Programme 2014-2020 supports EU consumer policy with a budget of EUR 188.8 million. It aims to help the citizens fully enjoy their consumer rights and actively participate in the Single Market. It focuses on four key areas:

  • a single market of safe products for the benefit of citizens and as a component of competitive businesses and traders;
  • a single market where citizens are well represented by professional consumer organisations who have the capacity to meet today's economic challenges;
  • a market where citizens are aware and exercise their rights as consumers.
  • an effective collaboration between national bodies to support the enforcement of consumer rights and advise the consumers.

Article 185 Initiatives 

The Article 185 Initiatives – built on the ERA-NET scheme – enable the EU to participate in joint research programmes together with several EU Member States.

Article 185 Initiatives under the Horizon 2020 Programme are:

AAL (Active and Assisted Living) Joint Programme

The Active and Assisted Living Joint Programme (AAL JP) – as well as its predecessor the Ambient Assisted Living Joint Programme – aims to create better conditions of life for the older adults and to strengthen the industrial opportunities in Europe through the use of information and communication technology (ICT) and by supporting innovative solutions. It funds cross-national projects with the involvement of SMEs, research organisations and end-users.

BONUS (joint Baltic Sea research and development) Programme 2010-2017

BONUS was started by the BONUS member states together with the EU with the aim to support sustainable development and ecosystem based management of the Baltic Sea region.

EDCTP (European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership)

EDCTP aims to accelerate the development of new or improved drugs, vaccines, microbicides and diagnostics against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria as well as other poverty-related and neglected infectious diseases in sub-Saharan Africa, with a focus on phase II and III clinical trials.

EMPIR (European Metrology Programme for Research and Innovation)

The overarching goal of EMPIR is to address the challenges faced by the European Metrology Research System and to maximise the benefits of improved measurement solutions for Europe. The overall objectives of EMPIR are thus to provide integrated and fit-for-purpose metrology solutions supporting innovation and industrial competitiveness and measurement technologies to tackle societal challenges such as health, environment and energy including support to policy development and implementation; and to create an integrated European Metrology Research system with critical mass and active engagement at regional, national, European and international level.

Eurostars aims to support research-performing small and medium enterprises, which develop innovative products, processes and services, to gain competitive advantage. Eurostars does this by providing funding for transnational innovation projects, the products of which are then rapidly commercialized.

EUREKA is an intergovernmental network with the aim to support market-oriented R&D and innovation projects. It funds SMEs, companies and technology related organisations through various clusters, networks and individual projects. It is composed of 41 members, including the European Union represented by the Commission.

COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology)

COST is an intergovernmental framework for European cooperation in science and technology, allowing the coordination of nationally-funded research on a European level. It is is one of the longest-running European frameworks supporting cooperation among scientists and researchers across Europe.
